The 24 hours of the Nurburgring:

The '24 hours of the Nurburgring' is one of the greatest sports car events of the year. Maybe it doesn't have the same status of importance like '24 hours of Le Mans', but it surely has as many fans as the famous french endurance race. Over 100.000 fans visit this race every year, camping all around the ring, which includes the GP-track and the famous Nordschleife called 'Gruene Hoelle' (=Green Hell [translated literally], which it surely is).

Start of construction: 27th September 1925
Opening: 18th June 1927
First event: 19th June 1927 GP Germany
Tracklength: 20,832km Nordschleife
(33 left- 40 rightcurves)
Finishing of the new GP course: 12th May 1984
Tracklength GP course: 3,043 / 3,038km (short version)
4,556 / 4,551km
(version of veedol schicane)
Tracklength GP course + Nordschleife: 25,359km since 1997

Since there is a real site dedicated to this event, I needn't go on writing so much about it. Just visit: 24h-rennen.de.

My first visit of this event was in the year 2000. My father had some tickets for the Zakspeed VIP-box (a visit of the pit lane included). This was really fascinating, but what impressed me the most was one car there, I haven't seen live before: The Zakspeed Chrysler Viper GTS-R. The sheer shape and sound of it made me exploring the world of sports cars, which I most unfortunetly payed no attention to ever before, except Formula 1. If you've got some time on your hands, you should really visit or watch it. It's worth every minute.

In memoy of Christian Peruzzi, who died during qualifiy- session on the 25th of May in a car accident on the Nordschleife in the 'Schwedenkreuz'.
